Eddy Current
The primary aim of an eddy current inspection is to identify surface or subsurface flaws, to perform conductivity based measurements, and for measuring material coating thickness. The method is sensitive to a component’s conductivity, permeability and dimensions.
Eddy Currents can be produced when applying an alternating magnetic field to an electrically conductive material. The strength of eddy currents generated in a material is entirely dependent on its conductivity, permeability and its geometry. Fluctuations in the material or geometry can be detected by the change in the impedance response of the test instrument. As an example, if there is a crack in a material’s surface the eddy currents must travel a greater distance around the crack, this travel distance can be identified in the form of altered impedance.
Eddy currents are solely electrically produced. Both phase and amplitude data can be displayed on a monitor. Determination of orientation relies heavily on the penetration of the eddy currents. Penetration can be changed by adjusted by the frequency. The basic rule-of-thumb is a higher frequency achieves lower penetration; however, lower frequencies produce lower sensitivity.
Most modern eddy current instrument have a phase array display. This gives an operator the ability to identify defect conditions. Lift off and other physical anomalies can be clearly identified. Eddy Current units are now available that can examine a material at two or more simultaneous test frequencies. These units allow for undesired effects to be cancelled out in order to provide enhanced detection of discontinuities.
Eddy Current or Electromagnetic Induction Services
If you are finding cracks, pits, inclusions, or voids on your structures or parts, and if those structures or parts are electrically conductive, then Eddy Current inspection be just what you need. Our team of experts can travel to your location or perform in-house inspection on your items. Great for ensuring the continued use of an aged asset, Eddy Current is highly mobile and effective.
We provide certified Level II or III inspectors all of whom are in accordance with NAS-410, SNT-TC-1A, ACCP or CP-189. We can perform your various inspections, we can provide complete on the job training or we can instruct you on the general use of Eddy Current technology. With every provided service our mission is quite simply excellence.
Eddy current can be used as a preventative maintenance inspection. Eddy Current can identify cracks before they become visible to the naked eye enabling very early detection of a failing item. This prevents unforeseen catastrophic failures.
